Stop the Strangle

Support WESSA’s 3-month campaign to clean our beaches and save marine life.

This Mandela Day, we mark the official launch of a nationwide movement to clean our beaches and protect marine life.

The Stop the Strangle action-campaign aims to remove dangerous ghost fishing gear — ghost nets, ropes, lines, and hooks that entangle and kill marine animals on South Africa’s coastline. These ocean stranglers are a major threat to our marine and avian biodiversity, and we need your help to stop them.

Our goal? To remove 670kg of marine and coastal pollution from our beaches – that’s 10kg for every year Madiba spent serving our country.

Make a donation that counts

Your donation directly funds the removal of life-threatening fishing gear, protects marine species, and supports youth engagement and education. Every rand helps us care for the environment.

Can’t donate? Join us at the beach

Spend 67 minutes (or more!) at any time from Mandela Day through to the end of September, helping us reach our 670kg goal across the country. You can join one of our planned clean-ups or host your own.

Together, we can honour Madiba’s legacy not just for 67 minutes, but over three impactful months of action. And since we’re kicking off during Plastic Free July, there’s no better time to take a stand against ocean pollution.
