TriWaters Tour 2015
Earlier this year WESSA partnered with the TriWaters Tour – a ‘source to sea’ expedition on the Vaal River undertaken by paddlers to promote community conservation and to highlight the importance of the Vaal and Orange rivers along on the way.
Brett Merchant (Australia), Franz Fuls (South Africa) and Troy Glover (Canada) set off on 16 January from the source of the Vaal River, close to Breyten in Mphumalanga, and paddled for almost three months to the mouth of the Orange River in the Northern Cape. Unfortunately Troy Glover had to withdraw shortly after the start for family reasons, but Brett and Franz continued and arrived in Alexander Bay on 4 April.
The line from the source of the Vaal River to the ocean via the Orange River is the largest continuous water body within the borders of South Africa with a distance of more than 2,500 km. En route, the team engaged with local communities and schools on river conservation with a focus on education and biodiversity.
