Bush Breakaways

Like the smell of woodsmoke from an open fire, there's something about sleeping under canvas that enhances the magic of nights spent in the African bush.

A sample of some special camps that offer the tented safari experience...

Under Canvas in the Timbavati: from R1250 per person per night
No electricity, no TV, and no cellphone signal, but comfortable safari tents with beds and linen, outdoor showers and an open-air boma under a canopy of African Ebony trees on the bank of the Nchlaralumi River. Lots of bush activities in "Big Five" country, with no set schedules, superb catering for all meals, and bring your own drinks.

Botswana Wilderness Experience: 7 days/6 nights from R10 500 pp
Four nights at a comfortable tented bush lodge (with ensuite ablutions, swimming pool and central facilities) in a private concession outside Moremi Game Reserve, plus two nights full-service camping in the Okavango Delta.

The price includes airfare Johannesburg/Maun return, road transfers, all meals, day/night game drives and bush walks, park fees. Valid 1 Nov to 31 Dec 2006.

Serengeti Wilderness Experience: 6 days/5 nights from R18 000 pp
One of SA's most experienced tour operators into East Africa recently established a fully tented wilderness camp 26km east of Seronera (the Serengeti's hub) overlooking the Ngare Nanyuki River. Being the furthest camp to the east, it has the benefit of relative isolation in this less visited region.

Package includes flights Johannesburg/Kilimanjaro return, charter flights between Arusha and Seronera, transfers, accommodation in Arusha, three nights in camp (full board) and game viewing activities. Valid to 31 Dec 2006.

Wildlife Safaris

Tourism feeds off the natural and cultural diversity of the planet.
It must contribute to its survival.

WESSA’s Northern Areas office provides a nature travel advisory and broking service to assist fellow wildlife enthusiasts discover and enjoy the magic of Southern Africa’s wilder places.

Why?
Ecotourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in international travel, yet it is ironic that conservation organisations - which have been so instrumental in the fight to preserve the wildlife sanctuaries that draw visitors into the bush - enjoy little direct financial benefit from tourist spending. This service seeks to generate funds for conservation projects from commission earned by acting as the middleman between travellers and the safari operators or establishments best equipped to satisfy their specific needs.

Benefits of using the service:
· As a long established conservation body, we have extensive contacts in and knowledge about most aspects of nature tourism in Southern and East Africa.
· As an independent, non-profit body, we provide impartial advice and assistance in planning trips into the bush. The operators and establishments we recommend support nature conservation.
· The satisfaction of knowing that what WESSA earns for its assistance is ploughed back into safeguarding our natural heritage.

Our modus operandi:
We operate as a broker and facilitator, working closely with a network of professional operators to plan itineraries and select destinations to meet the needs of the prospective traveller. Once an itinerary or booking has been finalised, the selected operator takes over.

Our sphere of operations:
While Southern Africa is our core area of expertise, the operators we work with are equipped to provide services throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Safaris of every description: overland camping, lodge fly-ins, canoeing, walking, horseback, elephant-back. Game viewing, birding, gorilla and chimpanzee tracking, whale watching.
Accommodation in safari lodges and bush camps in National Parks and private game reserves.
