Environmental Education - Training Opportunities For 2007

The fees include all tuition, teas, lunches, and dinners, transport during the course and a certain number of relevant resource materials as well as assessment and certification for the accredited option .

Accommodation and breakfasts are available at the relevant Centres, which should be contacted direct.

1 The four-day Environmental Educators Course: NQF Level 5: 12 credits

WESSA is now an accredited education and training provider and has adapted the Environmental Educators' course in order to align it to the three unit standards outlined below.

Unit Standard 13632 - Demonstrate knowledge of EE goals, principles and methods of their appropriateness in different contexts (4 credits)

Unit Standard 13651 - Review a variety of approaches to learning, teaching and evaluation (4 credits)

Unit standard 13637 - Network broadly to source information and support a key environmental issue or risk (4 credits)

There are two choices for participation in this course:
a) accredited version: this requires you to work on additional workplace assignments and to develop a portfolio of evidence (PoE) to meet the requirements for assessment against these unit standards. You obtain an accredited certificate worth 12 SAQA credits.

b) Non-accredited version: you simply attend the four-day course without generating the required evidence for assessment

The course includes:
•  An introduction and orientation to Environmental Education
•  Fieldwork and practical activities
•  Environmental interpretation
•  The identification of environmental issues and risks and approaches for action
•  Teaching materials and resources
•  Excellent opportunities for networking

Structure of the course:
•  Initial registration and payment for the course
•  Receive Learner Orientation for the course
•  Pre-course project
•  Four-day contact session - theory and practice where participants will receive a Learner Manual and start working on their Portfolio of Evidence (PoE)
•  SADC Attachments work on projects - this will include the required contact time and assessment of projects
•  Four-day course participants will leave to complete their PoEs in their workplace and will arrange to return for an extra 1 ½ days contact time prior to final assessment.

All activities and resources are adapted to local conditions. This "hands-on" course requires a high level of involvement from all participants. Brief lectures, extensive fieldwork, group discussions and projects ensure an enriching experience.

What to bring: comfortable clothing and walking shoes, plus items which will be sent to you once you have registered.

2 The SADC Professional Attachment Course: Education for Sustainable Development: Environmental Educators and Materials Development

This ten-day programme includes the four-day Environmental Educators Course described above, with additional time to:

•  Develop or adapt educational materials, programme or curriculum
•  Study Environmental Education theory and practice

This course provides an opportunity for professionals to develop resources or programmes that have relevance to their work context and to strengthen their practices through sharing with fellow professionals from the SADC region. Individual support and particular attention to theoretical concerns will be available during the programme.

Computer Literacy:
The last six days of the SADC Professional Attachment Course are spent developing materials on computers. Please provide details of your computer experience on the booking slip which you need to fax through to Shepherd Urenje.
