KZN - Working for Ecosystems

workingforecosystem.jpgWORKING FOR ECOSYSTEMS PROJECTS

Following the successful completion by WESSA:KZN of the WFE Phase 1 Project in July 2008, funded by the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism in conjunction with the eThekwini Municipality, it is gratifying to report that two more projects in the WFE initiative have been awarded to WESSA:KZN.  These are: -

A follow-up Phase 2 of the original work carried out in the nTshongweni/Giba Gorge and Drummond areas in 2007/2008.

A new phase 3 in the nTshongweni are of the eThekwini Municipal including some follow-up work in areas previously cleared.

Both of the above new projects are funded by the eThekwini Municipality, and the main thrust of these works is the clearance of invasive alien plants with which is coupled an education and training component.  Work has already commenced on both projects and will be completed during early 2010.

The photographs accompanying this article give some indication of the work being undertaken, and the sometimes difficult terrain in which it occurs.

Field workers, who currently total nearly 40 in number, are all suitable kitted out in the protective
clothing, goggles, gloves and hats etc. to prevent either injury or herbicide poisoning. All field
workers have undergone appropriate training prior to moving on to site.

An important ingredient in the education and training component of phase 2 and 3 is assistance from WESSA:KZN in arranging a course to assist participants in the establishment of small co-operatives for future independent employment in this field.
