About FreeMe

The original FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre was founded in Gauteng in 1997 by wildlife rehabilitators who realised that there was not enough organised care available for injured indigenous wildlife. FreeMe is a self-funded, registered Section 21 Non-Profit (Organisation), relying solely on the generosity of the public through donations, bequests, membership, sponsorship, and voluntary assistance.

The Wildlife and Environment Society of S.A. KZN Region has since 2005 facilitated the allocation and development of a 2 hectare site next to the Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve near Howick to establish a FreeMe branch in the KZN Midlands.

The main focus for 2006 and 2007 in KZN was to raise sufficient funds to establish the centre and to erect buildings, bomas, pens and a training centre.
These objectives have now been achieved with the exception of the large antelope bomas, and it is hoped to raise funds for the bomas in this year 2009.

Additional challenges for the immediate future are the appointment of a small fundraising committee to assist Ros Marais the CEO, and to also arrange for a panel of voluntary workers to assist Free Me in the many facets of its work.

Free Me KZN has its own website at  www.freemekzn.co.za

Please feel free to contact us should you have any queries or if you wish to contribute in some way to this worthwhile cause. Your assistance is still needed to make this much needed project a success.
