Since our establishment in

1926, we’ve played a

strong role in the moulding

of conservation practices

throughout southern

It is due to the efforts and strong

leadership within our membership that

many of our reserves – from local to

provincial and national – are in place

A large number of our members

throughout South Africa are part of

active branches or friends groups,

which play a key role in conserving the

natural landscapes and green corridors

in towns and cities by implementing

local conservation projects and

initiatives. They are guided by the

Mission Statement, Policies and

Position Statements of WESSA, and

play an important role in achieving the

aims of our organisation. Several

independent, environment and

community-based organisations align

themselves with us as affiliate

members, thus strengthening the

conservation movement. Another key

component of our membership is

business members who often work

closely with members or professional

staff on conservation projects or

activities. By supporting us, business

members receive tax-relief benefits and

also have the opportunity to improve

their B-BBEE scorecard, as we are an

accredited facilitator of Socio Economic

Since 1979 we’ve produced the

quarterly magazine

for our

junior members. It’s packed full of

fantastic facts and information about

how to live more sustainably and to

care for the earth. Each issue has a

different theme and supports the

National Curriculum, making it a

valuable and reusable educational

resource for children, parents and

teachers alike.

magazine has been

produced quarterly since 2009 in

association with several other

organisations. It provides informed

reporting on the country’s current

environmental issues, as well as

featuring work being done in the field

by the organisations involved.

The WESSA Awards have, since

1974, been used by our members to

recognise and honour those making a

significant contribution to the

environmental conservation or the

environmental education sector in

South Africa.
